Consistent Freezing

During install for Win2K, XP Pro, and also W98SE the system locks up. It also happens during install of RH v7.2. I've tried 2 separate HDDs and even put in a brand new PSU. Memory has been changed too.

The only thing left that might be the problem is one, if not both, CPUs.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

When exactly does it lock up? Was it a minimum install (only VGA, HD,Floppy?) ACPI or non-ACPI? _Might _ also be an IRQ conflict.

Do the capacitors on the board look ok?

Caps are fine, will check IRQs 2nite. It locks up right when the HDD format starts on a full install.

Well, I took er all apart and rebuilt from the ground up. I even switched CPU sockets then uped the RAM a bit and then I installed XP pro on a HDD that wasn't in the system originally.

Installation went perfect and after I started to install the microsoft upgrades and downloads, she froze.

It's beyond me at this point.

You could still try to run it with only one cpu. If it works, check if it works with the other one. If both cpus work, take one and check if it works in the other socket. If only a dual configuration does not work, I´d guess the board is defective.

Does the northbridge get hot? And: What video card do you use, btw?

Now that you mention it, the NorthBridge was kind of hot. The vid-card is a GeForce 2.

Hmmm.The Geforce2 ist rather power hungry, but I doubt it´s an insufficient PSU. Don´t think it would already lock up in 2D-mode.

You could put a fan to the northbridge (having a standard 8cm fan blowing at it from a few centimeters would do) and check if it still freezes. I once had a BP6 with defective caps (I know your caps look good, but who knows...) that froze randomly until I put a fan to the northbridge, which got very hot.

i have the box up and running and it is still going.... the northbridge is very hot... perhaps the fan would be a good idea....

where am i going to mount an 8cm fan a few centimeters from the chip.... i think i have a chipset fan that i can mount directly to the heatsink

I don´t know. Right now I have an 8cm fan with rubber feet standing on the video card. Obviously not an optimal solution. There is a new northbridge cooler from Zalman, the NB47-J which is quite large (37x37x47mm) and should offer sufficient passive cooling. Only 4-5 Euros here in Europe.

Put some thermal compound, such as Arctic Silver, under the northbridge's "greenie" heatsink. I've done this on my BP6 and Asus CUSL-2C. The BP6 now has a GlobalWin HSF on the northbridge.

Works like a dream. I installed the chipset heatsink and fan yesterday after lunch and I'v been running the BurnIn test ever since with no problems and no errors.
